NEW BOOK

Female guide through Zagreb in English

The Centre for Women's Studies Zagreb has published English version of a guide through Zagreb: Zagreb in Zagorka's Footsteps by Slavica Jakobović Fribec   It will be introduced at Zagorka's Memorial Flat, Dolac 8, November 24 at noon.

Marija Jurić (1873-1957), better known under her pen name Zagorka, was, and still is, the most widely read Croatian writer and author of popular novels with historical topics and strong female characters still feeding the literary imagination of the city of Zagreb: The Witch of Grič, The Countess from Petrinjska Street, Lotršćak's Daughter, A Little Revolutionary Girl... But Marija Jurić really was a revolutionary woman in more than one respect. She was the first female political journalist of her time, a correspondent from the Budapest parliament, a partisan of national ideas, a feminist activist, a union leader, a playwright - a scandalous career for a woman indeed!

In this guide, you will learn about Zagorka's life and about Zagreb's early 20th century society and culture, in a different way than in standard tourist guides. This is a story of a woman who dared to live from her work, who constantly struggled against marginalization, but who nevertheless remained beloved by her readers.
Let us introduce her, and her Zagreb, to you!

This book can be purchased at Center for Women's Studies, Dolac 8 (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.) or in the bookshop Jesenski Turk, Preradovićeva 5.
