RECEPTION AT NUNCIATURE

Farewell to the secretary of Diplomatic Corps in Croatia

A farewell reception for the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea H.E. Dae-ho Byun and his wife Ms. Yung-ae Cho Byun was held at the Apostolic Nunciature, March 10. In a somewhat gloomy atmosphere caused by the departure of a friend, the Apostolic Nuncio Mario Roberto Cassari, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, made an emotional speech.

- Let me say, dear Ambassador Byun and Mrs. Byun, that your departure is sad for us because you have held a position of preeminence among us, winning everyone's esteem, admiration and affection. You, Excellency, have been so kind to accept the task to be Secretary, I say perfect Secretary, of our Diplomatic Corps for more than one year. And we thank you very much for the great service you have done. Now, after three years spent in Croatia, you are leaving us, opening a new void, because, as I sad to all the departing Ambassadors, you too have become very dear to us - H.E. Mons. Cassari said.

Nuncio Cassari also pointed out that during his stay in Croatia H.E. Dae-ho Byun "demonstrated competence to everyone as a diplomat with remarkable qualities, a person of great sociability and cordiality"

- As a calm, intelligent and incisive diplomat, we have noticed the soundness of your personal formation and the wealth of knowledge, and, in addition, your affability and tranquility of spirit. Our Diplomatic Corps, which is so distinguished, due to the singular qualities of each of its members, will experience a great void after your departure. Dear Ambassador, with all our hearts we hope that your future will indeed be like a never-ending golden day for you, for your wife, for your two sons, for your dearest ones and for your work: rich in human and professional satisfactions - said H.E. Cassari.

According to custom, Diplomatic corps presented the outgoing Ambassador with the locally-made crystal plate with engraved names of his colleagues, to help keep memories of the friends he made in Croatia alive. The plate was presented by the Ambassador of Egypt, HE Eman Mohamed Zaki Moharram who represented the Diplomatic corps. On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Andrea Javor, Director General for Extra-European Bilateral Cooperation bid the Ambassador Byun a farewell.

H.E. Byun had come to Coratia in 2007 as Charge d'affaires and then became the ambassador of the Korean Embassy. He presented the credential letters to president Mesić on January 23, 2008. At the farewell reception he said that he should have done even more in the development of relations between the Croatian and the Republic of Korea, although his mission was to create a good framework for further development of good relations which the following ambassadors of Korea to Croatia will engage in. In a brief and emotional speech, he referred to the friendships he has made and the pleasant socializing during the last three years, particularly those that were held weekly on the golf course.
